Reimagining access to the outdoors

Brooklyn to Alaska is creating transformational experiences in the outdoors by giving a kid from Brooklyn the chance to climb a glacier, raft down a rushing river and sleep in a tent under the stars.

WHO WE SERVE

Participants are primarily BIPOC youth (13-15) who spend 2 weeks in the rugged wilderness of Alaska forging deep and lasting connections with the outdoors and with each other.

Classrooms aren’t Designed to show BRILLIANCE…

With the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park as their classroom, the organization strives to inspire and challenge the Brooklyn teens to overcome obstacles, develop self-confidence, and experience the power of open communication and teamwork.

A BOLD VISION FORWARD

After a decade of providing these life-defining adventures, Brooklyn to Alaska is taking bolder action in addressing the systemic inequities of outdoor recreation.

The next chapter in development is a training program for ‘graduates’ to become outdoor guides through The Graduate to Guide leadership program.

Our vision is that the inequities in outdoor recreation will only change if there is a significant investment in equipping these young people to become wilderness leaders with the skills and experience they need to be the next generation of guides and adventurers.

together, we can close the adventure gap

“There’s something about getting off a plane in Alaska and seeing someone who is going to be your wilderness guide who not only looks like you but also grew up in the same city.”

— Matt Stokes, Volunteer
